About the Author
For the last 30 years, Cathryn Cushner Edelstein, MA Speech Communication,BS Speech Pathology and Audiology, has been working with individuals who have come to the United States for work or school. Inspired by working with hundreds of international students and clients, this guide provides information most frequently misunderstood. Rules of communication are not universal; they are specific to particular cultures. The tips and suggestions in this book will afford the international student an inside look on how to successfully navigate verbal and nonverbal communication while pursuing studies and life in the United States.Her new book, Excuse Me, Can You Repeat That? How to Communicate in the U.S. as an International Student, is her latest effort toward making foreign visitors’ time here a positive, comfortable, and productive experience.
Currently, Edelstein is a Scholar-in-Residence in the Department of Communication Studies at Boston’s Emerson College. Prior to that position, she was a lecturer and served as the college’s Interim Basic Course Director, focusing on helping students improve their public speaking skills. Her academic accomplishments include developing curriculum for international graduate students studying at Emerson. She is also a speech consultant with her company Verbal Impact that she started in 1982. Her corporate clients have included Fidelity, Fox News, Hitachi, Homesite, Inktomi, Biosphere Medical, MIT and more. In addition, she has guest lectured at other prestigious colleges.
Before teaching at Emerson, Edelstein was an Adjunct Professor in the Communication Department at Middlesex Community College and an ESL Instructor at Framingham State College, both in Massachusetts. In addition, she has also designed speech curriculum and trained faculty to use the curriculum in classrooms. Edelstein grew up in a suburb of Boston where she still resides. She has two daughters, Alexandra and Carly, and a tripod Westie named Katie.
